Church of God African missions give Hope to people affected by HIV/AIDS by providing hope through their ministries

Tumaini AIDS Prevention Program

(T.A.P.P.)
Giving HOPE to lives affected by HIV and AIDS.
The Swahili word, "tumaini," means "hope" in English.

The Tumaini AIDS Prevention Program, or T.A.P.P. for short, was designed with just that purpose in mind - to give HOPE to people whose lives have been affected by HIV and AIDS.    Millions of deaths.  Countless orphaned children.  Infected people ostracized.  Affected families living in poverty.  In a country where HIV/AIDS has wreaked havoc for decades, hope is hard to come by.  But T.A.P.P. is fighting stigma and oppression by providing the hope so many people need.

And YOU can, too.

What is T.A.P.P.?

Sharing Life and Healing Together

Tumaini AIDS Prevention Program, T.A.P.P., is a grassroots social movement. Through solidarity, T.A.P.P. seeks to engage in long-term, holistic care with persons living with HIV and AIDS. T.A.P.P. provides training, home based care, income-generating projects, education and social support for a hopeful life. The members of T.A.P.P. share life together, learning to reject the myth of HIV/AIDS as a death sentence. In spite of stigma and oppression, they find healing in each other. Where HIV prevalence is high, immense strain is placed on communities and economic structures. Already impoverished areas are facing a greater struggle for basic survival needs. Poverty and stigma make income scarce, often forcing a sacrifice of medical care and education. T.A.P.P. works with the Church of God, East Africa to create and facilitate programs that help build community, income, better quality of life, and hope for those affected by HIV/AIDS.

Above all, love each other deeply,
because love covers over a multitude of sins.

The History of T.A.P.P.

Tumaini became the vision and the solution to overwhelming need.

The Church of God child sponsorship office is located in the Kasubi area of Kampala, the capital city of Uganda, East Africa. Over time, more and more families showed up needing assistance. The need to care for families affected by HIV was overwhelming. A separate program was essential to meeting their unique needs, and Tumaini AIDS Prevention Program, T.A.P.P., was born. Tumaini, or “hope,” became the vision of this program. In 2004, the national office was opened in Kasubi, just down the road from the child sponsorship office. Even now T.A.P.P. and the child sponsorship program continue to work in a close partnership. T.A.P.P. started as a local grassroots organization and remains to be so. The dreams and visions of T.A.P.P. come from native Africans who have been lifetime active members of their communities, and they are joining together to care for and empower one another!

T.A.P.P. Philosophy

"T.A.P.P. is considered a social program, but it also studies the medical, economic, cultural, and theological factors that have all contributed to the current HIV-led crisis in Africa. We believe that we are all infected or affected by HIV. In the areas where we are caring for our community members, we have seen much stigmatization, oppression, and marginalization targeted towards HIV positive persons. We desire to walk alongside these persons, recognizing their dignity and letting them teach us along the way. T.A.P.P. continues to learn what it means to encounter Jesus in the context of African culture. We believe in the gospel of hope, love, and action. As we go, the life of Jesus continues to teach us how to live in-tune with the heart of a God that finds compassion for all people regardless of economic, social, moral, or religious background. This is the gospel we hope to take to our teachers – the T.A.P.P. members." - T.A.P.P.
